Instruments
Students at Longacre Elementary explore a wide-variety of instruments throughout their K-5 music education.
Kindergarten and first grade students explore a variety of small percussion instruments such as egg shakers, hand drums, rhythm sticks, wood blocks, boomwhackers, sand blocks, thunder drums, ocean drums, and floor toms.
Second grade students learn how to play our Orff instruments such as xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. We also explore our many instruments during our World Music Unit such as the bodhran, tin whistles, ocarinas, steel drums, congas, bongos, guiros, shekeres, talking drums, slit drums, tablas, cabasa, claves, and maracas.
Third grade students continue to use our Orff instruments as well as learn about our ukuleles. We spend 6 weeks learning how to play piano learning basic skills such as proper hand position, finding middle C, playing songs from audiation, and playing chord root harmonies to our songs (playing with two hands).
Fourth grade students continue to use our Orff instruments and ukuleles. We spend about 4 months learning how to care for and play the recorder. The recorder is the precursor instrument for 5th grade instrumental music. Playing recorder provides students an opportunity to learn how to read music with fluency as well as play with dynamics and expression.
Fifth grade students continue to use the many instruments in our music room. We spend about 3-4 months learning how to play ukulele. Students learn a variety of chords, strumming patterns, how to read TAB, how to adapt key signatures and substitute chords. Students may also choose to play an instrument in our band or orchestra program as well.

Ukulele Resources
The Longacre Elementary Music Program received generous donations and grants to purchase 30 brand new Mahalo Ukuleles! We are the proud owners of six purple, blue, black, orange, and green soprano ukuleles. Students in third through fifth grade will learn how to strum and play basic chords on the ukeleles.
If your family has an ukulele at home, you may find this online tuner useful. We use Snark Tuners in class. They can be purchased here.
We love using Bolo Picks in class. If your student has a ukulele to practice at home, you can purchase Bolo Picks here.
